Louisiana Hunters Urged to Clean Out Freezers for Local Food Bank

September in America is Hunger Action Month, so this month, in preparation for that, Louisiana hunters are encouraged to clean out their freezers before the upcoming hunting season and share their leftover bounty with the hungry.

Donations will be distributed directly to those in need in all the parishes served by the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana.

Hunters for the Hungry programs across the United States collectively donate nearly 10 million pounds of game meat annually, providing approximately 40 million healthy meal servings. These donations include fish, game and other frozen protein items.

Hunters for the Hungry encourages hunters and anglers to enjoy the plentiful wild game in Louisiana and give back by sharing frozen fish and game with the hungry through programs such as “Clean Out Your Freezer Day” and “Donate A Deer” in the winter months.

“Clean Out Your Freezer Day” gives sportsmen an excellent opportunity to put their leftover fish and game to good use when preparing for the upcoming hunting season

Last year alone, through "Hunters For The Hungry" annual "Clean Out Your Freezer Day" Louisiana hunters donated 18,500 pounds of protein throughout the state.

In the Shreveport/Bossier area, donations can be made on Sunday, August 23, 2026, between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm at Smith Family Farms, 4970 Barksdale Blvd, Suite 1100, Bossier City.

After that, from Monday through Friday, August 24 through 28, between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm, donations can be dropped off at the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana at 285 Mt. Zion Rd. in Shreveport

Any properly packaged, labeled, and dated game, fish, or other protein, as well as other frozen foods, are accepted for this special occasion!

Hunters For The Hungry/Cava

Properly packaged means labeled and dated. The food bank won't take items that they can’t identify. Vacuumed sealed or from a professional processor are best.

Items need to be frozen and all donor ice chests will be immediately returned at time of donation.  No need to leave personal ice chests with them.
