To say that tonight's low temperature in Shreveport will be "somewhat" chilly, would be the equivalent of saying that the hit television show "Yellowstone" was "somewhat" entertaining.

It's going to get extremely cold. Downright miserable for some of us who truly enjoy those 100 degree dog says of summer.

In fact, according to the Weather Channel, we will be extremely close to the record low temperature for Shreveport on the date of January 22.  Their forecast for tonight/tomorrow morning highlights this auspicious occasion:

A clear sky. Near record low temperatures. Low 19F. Winds light and variable.

So, if a predicted low of 19 degrees isn't a record for Shreveport on this date, exactly what is the record?

A quick search online led me to the website, extremeweatherwatch.com, where I learned that on January 22, 1959, Shreveport experienced its lowest temperature ever for that date which was 16.

The Weather Channel is right, that's "near record" but if they've slightly miscalculated tonight's low, we could be in for a new record even though it's one we really won't enjoy setting.

Course this is nowhere near the record for the coldest temperature ever experienced in Shreveport.  According to the National Weather Service, that frigid record came on February 12, 1899.

The coldest temperature on record at Shreveport is -5 degrees F on February 12, 1899. Temperatures of freezing or below occur each winter with an average of 39 days during the year. Temperatures drop below 15 degrees F only about one out of every two winters.

The very next day, on February 13, 1899, Minden was the site of the lowest temperature ever recorded in the whole state of Louisiana.  The U.S. Department of the Army mentions that date in regards to Louisiana's overall climate information.

Louisiana's highest recorded temperature is 114 °F (46 °C) in Plain Dealing on Aug. 10, 1936 while the coldest recorded temperature is −16 °F (−27 °C) at Minden on Feb. 13, 1899.

Indeed, tomorrow's predicted low of 19 will be "near record" for the date of January 22, but thankfully it's nowhere near Louisiana's record low of -16 degrees.

Plus, it means we'll be one day closer to those 100 degree days of summer!
