Louisiana Dock Workers Strike – This Could Boost Prices on Goods
SHREVEPORT, LA – The world is watching what’s happening at ports all around the United States. The union representing U.S. dockworkers has called for a strike. This means 45,000 workers have walked off the job.
This strike will likely shut down ports across the East and Gulf coasts. This includes port workers at New Orleans which is one of the largest ports in the nation.
This work stoppage threatens to significantly impact the nation’s supply chain. This could drive up prices and demand for many household goods. This strike by members of the International Longshoremen’s Association could cause 36 ports to temporarily shut down. These ports handle roughly half of the goods shipped in and out of the U.S.
What Do the Port Workers Want?
The union blames the Maritime Alliance for continuing to block efforts to reach an contract agreement. The workers are trying to get a better deal on wages. They claim recent offers have been unacceptable.
The port workers also want a total ban on the automation of cranes, gates and container-moving trucks used in the loading or unloading of freight.
Could this Strike Impact the Holidays?
There is concern that if this strike is prolonged, we could see delays in getting goods delivered in time for the holiday season. Americans could also be looking at even higher prices as retailers feel the supply squeeze.
President Biden says he will not intervene in this work stoppage.
